Changuu Island, also known as Prison Island, is located approximately 30 minutes by boat from Stone Town. On this guided tour, you’ll explore the island’s fascinating history and its famous giant Aldabra tortoises that freely roam the grounds. Originally owned by an Arab merchant, the island was intended as a detention site for rebellious slaves, but it was never used for that purpose. Instead, it became a quarantine station during yellow fever outbreaks. In 1893, General Lloyd Mathews purchased the island and built the prison that still stands today, earning it the name “Prison Island.”

STONE TOWN TOUR

Zanzibar is famously known as the “Spice Island” for its rich variety of spices. This guided spice farm tour is one of the best ways to experience its aromatic heritage firsthand. In the 1850s, Sultan Said bin Sultan introduced a wide range of spices to Zanzibar, mainly from Asia, making them a key export. During your visit, you’ll walk through lush plantations, see how spices like turmeric, cardamom, cinnamon, black pepper, cloves, and nutmeg are grown and harvested, and even taste and photograph them. The two-hour guided walk also lets you enjoy the island’s tropical scenery and rural life. At the end, you’ll have the chance to purchase freshly packed spices as souvenirs or gifts.
