PRISON ISLAND AND STONE TOWN TOUR
Changuu Island, commonly known as Prison Island, is located about 30 minutes by boat from Stone Town. This guided tour takes you through the island’s fascinating history and unique attractions, including the giant Aldabra tortoises that roam freely. Originally owned by an Arab merchant, the island was intended as a detention site for rebellious slaves but was never actually used for that purpose. Instead, it later served as a quarantine station during yellow fever outbreaks. In 1893, General Lloyd Mathews purchased the island and built the prison structure that still stands today, giving the island its enduring name — Prison Island. During your visit, you’ll have the chance to see, interact with, and feed the magnificent tortoises.
Prison Island (Changuu Island) Highlights:
• Aldabra tortoises: Giant tortoises originally gifted from the Seychelles; they are one of the main attractions.
• Feeding tortoises: Visitors can often feed or interact with these tortoises under supervision.
• Prison Island: Historically used as a prison and quarantine station; now a popular day-trip destination for history, and tortoise encounters.
Stone Town is the cultural and historical heart of Zanzibar. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, its 19th-century architecture reflects a unique blend of Arab, Persian, Indian, and European influences that shaped Swahili culture. This tour covers the city’s most iconic landmarks, including the bustling Darajani Market — the island’s main bazaar — the haunting site of the former Slave Market, the historic Old Fort, and the exterior of Freddie Mercury’s childhood home. Along the way, you’ll discover Stone Town’s rich stories, its maze of narrow streets, colonial-era buildings, and famous intricately carved Zanzibari doors.
Highlights of Stone Town, Zanzibar
Darajani Market: The bustling local bazaar where locals buy fresh produce, spices, and everyday goods. It’s a vibrant spot to experience the daily life of Zanzibaris.
The Former Slave Market: One of the most significant historical sites on the island. Located at the Anglican Cathedral, this is where East Africa’s largest slave market once operated.Â
Freddie Mercury House: The birthplace of Queen’s legendary frontman, Freddie Mercury (born Farrokh Bulsara).
Zanzibar Doors: Stone Town is famous for its elaborately carved wooden doors — each telling a story. The doors reflect a blend of Arab, Indian, and Swahili influences.
Indian Doors: Recognizable by their ornate brass studs and floral or geometric carvings. Originally, the studs were meant to repel elephants in India — but in Zanzibar, they became a decorative status symbol for wealthy Indian merchants.
