PRISON ISLAND AND NAKUPENDA SANDBANK

Changuu Island (Prison Island) Changuu Island, also known as Prison Island, is located about 30 minutes by boat from Stone Town. Our guided tour will take you through the island’s fascinating history and its scenic surroundings, including encounters with the giant Aldabra tortoises that freely roam the area. Originally owned by an Arab merchant and intended to confine rebellious slaves (although no prisoners were ever held there), the island was later used as a quarantine camp during yellow fever outbreaks. In 1893, General Lloyd Mathews purchased the island and built the prison that still stands today, which earned it the name “Prison Island.”

“Nakupenda” means “I love you” in Swahili. Located near Stone Town on Unguja Island, Nakupenda Beach — also called Nakupenda Sandbank — is one of Zanzibar’s most stunning beaches. We will pick you up from your hotel to begin your adventure and let you enjoy the exotic, natural beauty of Nakupenda. Relax on the sandbank in the middle of the ocean while we serve you fresh seasonal fruits from Zanzibar and a delicious seafood BBQ lunch, featuring prawns, octopus, lobster, calamari, fish, chips, and salad, and so on.

Vegetarian options: If you don’t prefer seafood, we also have other alternatives — just let us know in advance so we can prepare for you!

Some alternatives such as: fresh salads, fried chicken, chips, grilled chicken, or rice with coconut sauce

Tip: Bring sunscreen, water shoes, a hat, and extra dry clothes. You'll be wading in shallow water, so you'll want to change into dry clothes after the tour.
