Changuu Island, also known as Prison Island, is about 30 minutes ride by boat from Stone Town. Our guide will take you to the island to discover its historical past and present, including the endemic giant tortoises. The island was formerly owned by an Arab and was intended to be used for the imprisonment of recalcitrant slaves, but no prisoners were ever housed; on the contrary, the island became a quarantine station for yellow fever epidemics.

It was purchased by General Lloyd Mathews and the prison that still stands today was built in 1893, hence the name "Prison Island". The Aldabra giant tortoises also lived on the island. but now we use the island as a tourism place, you will experience and learn many more things when you visit there.
