Changuu Island (Prison Island) Tour Located about 30 minutes by boat from Stone Town, Changuu Island—commonly known as Prison Island—is one of Zanzibar’s most popular attractions.

On this guided half-day tour, you’ll explore the island’s fascinating history and discover its famous giant Aldabra tortoises, which roam freely around the island. Originally owned by an Arab for the incarceration of rebellious slaves (although no prisoners were ever held there), the island later served as a quarantine station during yellow fever outbreaks. In 1893, General Lloyd Mathews purchased the island and built the prison that still stands today, giving the island its name.
