MANGAPWANI CAVE ZANZIBAR

Mangapwani Slave Chamber Tour

Located about 20 kilometres north of Stone Town, the Mangapwani Slave Chamber is a powerful reminder of Zanzibar’s dark past. Built around 1880 by Mohammed Bin Nassor Al-Alwi, a wealthy slave trader, the chamber was carved from coralline rock and concealed beneath a solid ceiling. Originally a cave connected to the seaside 2 kilometres away, it served as a secret passage for transporting enslaved people even after slavery was officially abolished in 1873. From 1880 to 1905, the chamber was used to hide human cargo bound for illegal trade, mainly to the Middle East.

What You’ll See:
You will visit this underground square chamber and learn about the role Zanzibar played in the East African slave trade. The site tells the story of the countless men, women, and children held in horrific conditions before being smuggled out by sea.
